How to Set the Tone for a Stress-Free Christmas Season

Linkedin Share

‘Tis the season for making lists, buying gifts, and stressing out as people try to reach an unattainable holiday ideal the culture sets as the standard for this time of year.

But what if Christians decided to go against the flow of the hustle and bustle and instead focused on the reason for the season?

Dr. Bill Thrasher, professor of theology at Moody Bible Institute, sits down with host of the Counter Culture Mom Show, Tina Griffin, to discuss the theme of his book “Putting God Back into the Holidays” about practical ways families can reduce stress and make Jesus the spotlight of Christmas.

Keeping Christ the center of Christmas is no easy task these days, but Dr. Thrasher encourages viewers to intentionally invite Jesus into holiday activities.

One practical way his family practiced this was by setting an extra place setting at the dinner table for Jesus as a reminder to keep the focus on Him rather than on the high expectations and pressures this season brings.

Because the joys and comforts of Christmas are not a reality for everyone, Dr. Thrasher encourages the lonely and troubled heart that “Christ wants to enter into the brokenness.”

When people trust Him, He will refresh and provide rest despite the stress threatening to steal the peace Immanuel came to earth to give everyone.

No matter how often commercials, ads, and emails try to convince people this season is about getting everything on their Christmas list, Dr. Thrasher reminds viewers that the true, deeper, and more fulfilling meaning of the most wonderful time of year is asking this question: “How can I be a vessel of love to others?”

In answering and living out this question, believers imitate the servant-heart of Jesus, and as parents set this example for their kids, they will experience the joys of how much better it is to give than to receive.
