If someone ever wondered how Timmy Newsome, former fullback for the Dallas Cowboys went from football player to full time CEO of one of the most successful tech companies in the southwest, look no further than his conversation with author and national news contributor, Valerie Sokolosky.

During an episode of Doing It Right: The Stories That Make Us, where Sokolosky interviews some of the most influential leaders and discovers what drives their character, passion, and influence, Sokolosky and Newsome dive deep into the days leading up to his nine-season football career and how writing computer software in college evolved into the North Carolina native’s successful thirty-year business career.

What grounds the Hall of Famer isn’t the measurable outcomes he can see, but by habitually drowning out the noise around him he focuses on the mission at hand.

Growing up in a small town with a mom who was a schoolteacher, a farmer and mechanical engineer for a dad, and surrounded by five siblings, Newsome explained that his home environment contained high expectations without high pressure.

His experience as a young black boy at an all-white school allowed him to embrace a different culture while his mom taught him about black history, which gave him “the best of both worlds,” he said.

When he attended Winston-Salem State University, there was no lack of obstacles in front of the fullback turned CEO, who always found ways to counteract challenges and stay positive through his college career.

Drafted to the Dallas Cowboys while majoring in business administration with a minor in computer science, Newsome’s mantra of “do something new and better every day,” eventually led him to start his successful business, Newtec Business Solutions.

Driven by excellence through patience and persistent hard work, Newsome reveals that ending his time with the Dallas Cowboys was disappointing but taught him to be more assertive in future endeavors and experiences.

Newsome attributes his football and business success to the practice of living life with more substance than style. Staying true to his convictions produces sustaining character, making a lasting impact through the relationships he cultivates with family, coworkers, and former Dallas Cowboys teammates.

Through his conversation with Sokolosky, Newsome’s authentic and real personality shines through and alludes to the biblical truth that careers or accomplishments don’t define success; rather, success comes when someone allows their Creator define who they are.
