The Truth About Truth

“And the lonely voice of youth cries, ‘What is truth?'”

Johnny Cash wrote those lyrics to the song “What Is Truth” in 1970, but they seem today to be more relevant than ever. Everywhere you look, people are questioning what truth is. Young people don’t want their parents answers, and culture is moving further and further from absolutes.

What started as the phrase: “What is true for you may not be true for me,” has turned into a society where the even basic truths like the gender you were born with don’t mean anything.

The question remains, “What is truth?” As Christians it is easy to point to the Scriptures as a mere moral code, but the gospel holds so much more than that.

Jesus warned those religious people who looked for the rules to govern their lives and ignored the One who fulfilled all those rules.

“You search the Scriptures because you think that in them you have eternal life; and it is they that bear witness about me, yet you refuse to come to me that you may have life,” (John 5:39-40, ESV).

Truth isn’t an idea, a religion, a feeling, or a even a moral code. Truth is a person and that person is Jesus Christ.

Jesus said, “I am the way, the truth, and the life” (John 14:6, ESV).

God came to earth as Truth and Love personified. He walked with us and healed us and taught us and defeated death for us so we can live in freedom.

“And you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free” (John 8:32, ESV).

It is only in knowing Jesus that we will be truly free. He gives us an identity that won’t changed with culture or personal experience. He tells us who we are.

The gospel is the Good News that we can know truth, because we can know Jesus. We don’t have to climb the highest mountain and beat our bodies to find the truth we are seeking for. We don’t have to read all the latest self-help books or go to all the newest seminars.

The truth was given to us in the Bible. And a relationship with Jesus will make it come alive.

The Holy Spirit has promised to lead us in ALL truth (John 16:13). It is not some ethereal or super intellectual thing. We CAN know truth because we can know Him. And this is the best news ever!
