Our Culture is Obsessed with 1 Word: Identity
Our culture is obsessed with identity.
We are constantly bombarded with ideas and suggestions of how we should define ourselves and others. Just listen to the news, watch the latest television commercials or visit a theater near you. Identity is in style, and this world can’t get enough of it.
If we take a step back and really consider this “new” phenomenon, we’ll soon realize that the pursuit of identity isn’t unique to this generation. In fact, we could start at the very beginning of time, with the first man and woman, and follow the timeline right up to today.
What we’d find is that every generation has been obsessed with the same questions of self-worth: Who am I? What’s my purpose? Was I created for more? And it’s no wonder – we were created for more, much more than this world has to offer.
So, why do so many turn to the world for an answer it is not equipped to give? Why does mankind choose so often to live in the temporal, striving for things that can never truly satisfy?
The answer to these questions is simple: We live in a broken world that will never cease competing for our attention and devotion in order to draw us away from our intended purpose. This battle is a lasting consequence of sin and one we must be prepared to fight.
But here’s the good news! Our Creator is equipped to answer our questions on purpose, and He has not left us to fight alone. He created you and me and has given us His infallible Word to guide us each step of our journey in this foreign land we are passing through. Even though we still have battles to face, we can rest in knowing that God has already won the war.
If you’re struggling with self identity and feel overwhelmed by the pressure to find purpose in today’s world, here are three encouraging episodes on Liftable that we believe will help guide you to clarity, peace and joy:
In her Grow with God devotional series, author and creator Kytia L’amour explains how you are a masterpiece, designed by our loving Creator for a specific purpose. Understanding that you are not an accident or just a number in a crowd of people is the first step in grasping what God has in store for your life.
In Women of Faith’s Identity Class, host Alita Reynolds and life coach Haley Scully talk about understanding our identity in Christ and the practical application of God’s Word to our everyday lives. While the truth can hurt at times, in part 2 and 3 of this class, they explain how our daily behaviors typically result from self image struggles. You will be encouraged to break free from feelings of guilt and shame in order to walk in the freedom God desires for your life.
Karen Conrad and her husband Dave share how belonging to Jesus gives us a new identity, one blameless in the sight of our Creator. God is faithful to reveal your identity in Christ and bring healing to your life.
At Liftable, our prayer is that you gain a deeper understanding of what identity really means in order to get aligned with God’s plan for your life. Only then will you find true fulfillment and experience the peace of God that surpasses all understanding.
