Where Is Your Treasure?

“For where your treasure is, there will your heart be also.” (Luke 12:34, ESV)

It’s easy to live an unbalanced life. Most of us don’t have someone hovering over our shoulder telling us where our time belongs.

It wasn’t until I had a baby that I was forced to slow down and focus my attention on the things that really mattered. For a while family was on the back burner because I had so much work to do for God, and I could not be bothered. Surely they would still be there for me when all was said and done, right?

Take it from me, you can easily burn a lot of bridges while you’re “getting stuff done” and living your life like it’s golden.

A few years ago, you couldn’t tell me that I didn’t love my family. Everything I did was with them in mind, but I was hardly ever around enough to show it.

I was busy doing me and getting my dreams off the ground. I don’t think it’s a bad idea to focus on yourself, but my main regret was not checking in and hitting pause a few times a week.

With all of that being said, I’m sure you can think of some areas in your life that are important to you, yet they are collecting dust while you are busy doing everything under the sun.

“For everything there is a season, and a time for every matter under heaven.” (Ecclesiastes 31, ESV)

Here’s a quick activity I’d like for you to do. Get a piece of paper and draw a vertical line down the center, making two columns.

In the column on the left (A), list your priorities in order of importance. In the right column (B), list what percentage of your time you currently devote to that priority. This makes it easy to see if your actions really line up with your priorities.

For instance, if God is number one, but you only set aside ten percent of your time to Him, is He really number one? If building your business is number five on your list, but sixty percent of your time is spent catering to it, you might have been misled with how high you’ve really placed it over everything else in your life.

It’s much more beneficial to see things in the correct perspective.

Perfect balance is somewhat impossible, but it may help to check in daily or weekly to make sure that you are still giving sufficient time to God, yourself, family, relationships, health, work, school, etc.

You can also ask someone to keep you accountable so that you don’t fall into the habit of spreading yourself too thin or even putting off everything in laziness. Don’t neglect the Holy Spirit either, you may need to adjust your column A soon to line up with God’s will.
