A woman used social media to reunite with the couple who saved her life.

Sarah Schlereth was eating at Mann Meats in Florissant, Missouri over Labor Day weekend when she realized she was choking.

She spoke with KSDK, telling the reporter, “‘I was trying to get the food to go down and it got stuck to where I couldn’t breathe at all.”

Sarah felt that “something just told her” to go over to a couple she didn’t know. Richard and Doretta Irwin were visiting from out of town, staying with their daughter. Richard sprang into action because he knew how to do the Heimlich maneuver.

“My mother had a hiatal hernia and she would sometimes choke on food when she was eating,” Richard said.

Thankfully, Richard was successful in dislodging the food causing the life-threatening loss of Sarah’s airway. The incident was caught on cameras in the restaurant. Posted to Facebook, at the time of this writing the video has now received over 13,000 views.

After saving her life, the couple offered to pray over Sarah and she said “yes please.”

KSDK reports, “In the moment, you can see the Irwins huddled together praying with Sarah. As Doretta leans forward, you can see the back of her shirt in the video.”

The following video posted on KSDK’s YouTube page tells the full story.

Faithwire reports the verse on the couple’s shirt is part of Matthew 22:37-39: “Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind and love your neighbor as yourself.”

The couple don’t just believe in those words as fashion, they work to live them out through ministry.

Doretta and her husband wear those shirts when they do prison ministry. “I guess it was an appropriate shirt to have on to what happened Friday,” Doretta said.

Sarah was in such shock over what happened she didn’t get to thank the couple properly. Because she didn’t know who they were, Mann Meats posted the video to social media. People connected the three and they reunited at the restaurant to cement their bond.

There’s a lesson in it all, according to Doretta: “We can make the world a better place if we do love our neighbors as ourselves.”
