When I Have Nothing Left to Give

Linkedin Share

I sat sobbing in the tiny bathroom of an outdated motel in the middle of nowhere of West Texas. I was at the complete and utter end of myself.

Our transmission had failed on our car leaving our family of 5 stranded near the border of Mexico. The local mechanic told us it would take weeks to get the part for it.

In the middle of my panic, I couldn’t see the miracle that we had limped into the hotel parking lot right before the transmission gave out. I didn’t know that God was working behind the scenes, and that our story was far from over.

I was so exhausted and overwhelmed by the trials the past months had brought. I was just done.

In those moments, when nothing is left but your raw emotions, you can see clearly where your hope lies. But the beautiful thing about Jesus is even when we feel like our faith is in shambles and we have completely lost our way, He will come after us.

“What do you think? If a man has a hundred sheep, and one of them has gone astray, does he not leave the ninety-nine on the mountains and go in search of the one that went astray?” (Matthew 18:12, ESV)

We can all think of a moment where we are absolutely spent and have nothing left to give. In some seasons it feels like one hit after another and it’s hard to even see how we can keep standing let alone move forward.

But God is our refuge, our strength and our hope. He has promised to never leave us or forsake us. (Hebrews 13:5) In fact, even when we “feel” empty, we are not!

We always have His presence with us, inside us, all around us. (Psalm 139:7-8) He will lead us out of the valley and into greener pastures. (Psalm 23:2)

Do you tend to focus on what's going wrong instead of all the ways God has provided for you?

We were not left stranded in West Texas. Through a series of miraculous events, we found a mechanic an hour away who had “accidentally” ordered the wrong transmission part 24 hours before we contacted him.

Instead of sending it back, he kept it. It was the exact part we needed for our rare 20-year-old vehicle! God showed up in a big way and provided when we couldn’t have done anything to rescue ourselves.

Hold onto the the promises of God. When you come to the end of yourself, Jesus will meet you there. And you can rejoice knowing there was never anything you could do on your own in the first place.
