Danny Gokey Issues Warning to Christians About the "Drift" and Denying God's Power

Danny Gokey knows a little something about staying focused in the midst of difficult circumstances and not allowing yourself to “drift” away from the Lord.

He faced one of the most challenging circumstances a person can ever face when his first wife passed away.

That was about 14 years ago, and by God’s grace, he found the strength to run to the Lord, and allow the Lord to use the ashes of that loss to create some amazing beauty in his life.

Some of the details of that experience were highlighted in an interview he did with Risen Magazine.

Gokey notes on his website that “the power of music to provide purpose and direction, especially in the most trying times,” has shaped his life and been a career driver.

Recently, Gokey made a short, two-part video, warning Christians about the importance of avoiding drifting away from the Lord.

In part one, he said he believed “drifting” away from the Lord was, “the most dangerous thing that can happen to a believer. It’s very subtle, and sometimes you don’t even catch it.”

He referenced Hebrews 2:1: “Therefore we must pay much closer attention to what we have heard, lest we drift away from it.”

Gokey went on to explain what drifting it is, and how it happens.

“You know what drifting is? Imagine you’re in a boat, and you’re heading towards a specific direction and you have a motor on it. You decide to turn that motor off. You decide to relax, and unknowingly, the ocean, or culture… took you in a whole different direction. That’s what’s dangerous to the believer.”

That drift can happen because of a life-changing experience, such as losing a loved one and having to find a new normal, but more often than not, it’s subtle. It’s the result of little things that distract a person from what’s truly important.

“If we don’t hang on to the Word of God and we let the culture define what our values are, and what our morals are, we’ll pretty soon find out that we have a form of godliness but we deny the power thereof,” Gokey said.

“The drift is so real because the drift will take you away from what God wants you to do,” he added.

Gokey continued to expound on what makes drifting dangerous to the Christian when he quoted from Hebrews 2:2-3, ESV:

“For since the message declared by angels proved to be reliable, and every transgression or disobedience received a just retribution, how shall we escape if we neglect such a great salvation? It was declared at first by the Lord, and it was attested to us by those who heard.”

“You know, Jesus didn’t die on the cross so that we could go back to our sin patterns that we once had,” Gokey said in part two, adding that, “drifting allows people to justify sinful actions. The drift is real.”

Gokey also tied drifting in to Jesus’ warning in Revelation 2:4-5: “Jesus said in Revelation, ‘I hold this against you, that you have lost your first love.'”

“We must pay all the more attention that we don’t drift away from who God is, from what He says is right and wrong, and we don’t allow the culture to start redefining what right and wrong is.

“Because like I said, that is a form of godliness, but God’s not in it. God has made it very clear what is righteous, what is holy. He says it in His Word,” Gokey continued.

“Watch out for the Drift. Because the drift will pull you away from God. The drift will make you look like a Pharisee because you’ll have a form of godlessness for justifying your behaviors like the Pharisees did.

“The drift is real. Get God’s Word. That is the motor in the boat that will push you towards Jesus and not allow the culture to push you away from Him.”
