Abortion Doctor Has Spiritual Transformation: "We've Got to Fight for the Rights of the Unborn Children"

Jesus changes everything.

In the case of Dr. Vansen Wong of Sacramento, California, his relationship with Jesus completely transformed his medical practice, in particular, his perspective on and participation in abortion.

In an interview on CBN News, Wong told Christian podcaster Billy Hallowell in speaking of his past work as an abortion doctor, “it was primarily a financial decision, as he performed abortions at evening clinics in Sacramento.”

“I viewed it as providing a service,” he said. “I said to myself, ‘Well, abortion’s legal in this country, by law, our healthcare company has to provide abortion services and it’s gotta be somebody in our specialty. And if I don’t help out in this cause, then it’s just going to fall on a couple of people.'”

“Wong said he simply believed he was providing a service to women and felt he would be compassionate in how he delivered that care. But after finding Jesus, he said he discovered how horrific abortion truly is — and now he’s speaking out.”

According to The Christian Post, it took Wong a couple of years to become a Christian, even though his family was faithfully attending church.

“‘When I became a Christian, it was not an instantaneous, connect-the-dots that ‘Oh my gosh, people are infinitely valuable, made in God’s image.  I really didn’t understand initially that performing abortions was wrong,” Wong said.”

Dr. Wong had been experiencing a personal crisis over the death of an 18-year-old patient. The crisis deepened when he faced a review of his medical license and so he tried to make a “deal” with God.

One week, his pastor preached about abortion at a time in the early 2000’s when partial-birth abortions were being debated. Dr. Wong says it’s the only time the pastor had ever preached about the topic.

“It was an uncharacteristic description of that barbaric procedure that made me realize, ‘my God, you are telling me that abortion is wrong,'” he said. “And so, it was at that point that I realized that abortion was no longer something I should be participating in.”

For Wong, conversion to faith in Jesus and a changed heart on how that impacted him professionally was a process.

First, he entered a relationship with Jesus and then, the truth of Christ changed his way of thinking about all of life. He went from performing hundreds of first trimester abortions to refusing to perform the procedure at all.

Dr. Wong not only declines to participate in abortions, he has also become an outspoken advocate against abortion. He believes it’s a topic most people who support abortion refuse to discuss in detail to avoid facing what it really entails.
