Here's Why Christians Must Stand Against Abortion
One of the biggest hot topic issues in our country, and honestly in our world right now, is abortion. Those who hold a Pro-Life position are frequently demonized in numerous ways.
Pro-Life supporters are commonly referred to as bigots, human rights suppressers, idiotic, haters of science, etc. You can probably think of some additional descriptors.
Psalm 139:13-14 states, “For You created my inward parts; You wove me in my mother’s womb. I will give thanks to You, for I am fearfully and wonderfully made; Wonderful are Your works, And my soul knows it very well” (NASB).
The psalmist gives insight as to why Christians must stand against abortion, promoting life. Every person, regardless of gender, ethnicity, or socioeconomic level, is made by God.
God is the Creator of all, and this passage teaches that He developed us within our mother’s wombs. We are fearfully and wonderfully made, and no one can question the wonderful nature of God’s works.
Those who deny the existence of God, which requires great oversight (creation, history, miracles, etc.), do not understand the pertinence of God within the abortion discussion. Supporting the termination of life for an unborn child is in direct opposition to the work of God.
The act of abortion is an attempt to “play God,” deciding who has a chance at life and who doesn’t. Jesus is the Author of Life (Acts 3:15); not us.
Jeremiah 1:5 echoes Psalm 139, “Before I formed you in the womb, I knew you…” (NASB).
God is omniscient — all-knowing. He knew everything about you before you were even born. What an amazing reality!
Not only did He know you, but He created you exactly as He saw fit. John Frame writes, “In creation, we see God’s lordship on display in his control over all things, his authority over all the universe, and his presence in every part of creation.”
We live in a world that has been corrupted by sin, so we sadly see birth defects and deformities in life. However, God loves those children as much as He loves any other.
God looks beyond our physical and mental capacities and sees us all as image bearers of the Most High God (Genesis 1:26). He also calls all mankind to Himself, regardless of whether you think you are good enough or not (John 12:32).
How then should we respond to those who attack Pro-Life positions? First, remember, love “does not rejoice in unrighteousness, but rejoices with the truth” (1 Corinthians 13:6, NASB).
Everything we do must be motivated by the love and truth of Christ. We do not support wickedness … ever!
However, the way to transform a lost world is by the proclamation of the Gospel (Romans 10:14). If we are unwilling to share, we shouldn’t expect to see change.
We should also pray for the lost to see the Light. Acts 26:18 demonstrates this kind of prayer, “…open their eyes so that they may turn from darkness to light and from the dominion of Satan to God, that they may receive forgiveness of sins and an inheritance among those who have been sanctified by faith in Me” (NASB).
Never weary of standing for the things of God. Let Christ be your strength!
