Senior Dog Reportedly Missing for Two Months Found Deep within Cave
One family is astounded at the miraculous recovery of their missing pet!
Spelunkers or cavers often find unexpected treasures when they explore the underground caves they enjoy, but the treasure they discovered this week was a beloved missing family dog.
“A spelunking group in Perry County, Missouri found and rescued a senior dog Saturday that had been missing for nearly two months. The group was deep inside the Tom Moore Cave system between Brewer and Perryville when they discovered Abby,” according to KTVI.
Abby had been missing since June 9th. The family imagined that by now she was gone forever until local fire officials and rescuers, going door-to-door, knocked on theirs with the news and reunited the dog with her owners.
No one knows how Abby wound up in the cave which is nearly 25 miles long. The cave is the second-longest in Missouri.
While there is some running water in the almost completely darkened cave, how Abby survived is also a great mystery. If only dogs could talk!
“Rick Haley, a trained cave rescuer, was on hand to oversee a sump dive and there was an issue with a diver’s equipment when he was notified of the dog. Haley and Gerry Keene successfully maneuvered Abby through a two-foot opening in the cave and then some 500 feet over a long vertical climb to safely get her out of the cave.”
Rick Haley reported his experience of the rescue on Facebook.
“The dog was not in good shape. We package the dog in a duffel bag with her head sticking out. This was to protect her and the rescuers as she would likely struggle. We moved her 500 feet to a very tight, awkward, vertical climb, handing her hand to hand upward to the surface. She was totally cooperative,” he wrote.
While some search caves for gold or silver, Abby’s family surely believes the life of their loving pet is a priceless find!
