"Peppa Pig" Introduces Same-Sex Couple into Cartoon Plot
“Peppa Pig,” the popular animated series on Nick Jr. in the United States, released a groundbreaking episode last week which introduced same-sex parents into the plot.
The series, where the characters have British accents, tells of the adventures of a young piglet named Peppa and her mother, father, and little brother.
In the episode titled Families, one of Peppa’s friends, Penny Polar Bear, shows the audience a drawing of her family.
“I live with my mummy and my other mummy,” Penny said. “One mummy is a doctor, and one mummy cooks spaghetti. I love spaghetti.”
According to Christian Headlines, the episode was broadcast two years after a petition demanded that the series add a same-sex couple, stating: “Children watching Peppa Pig are at an impressionable age, and excluding same-sex families will teach them that only families with either a single parent or two parents of different sexes are normal.”
“This means that children of same-sex parents may feel alienated by Peppa Pig, and that other children may be more likely to bully them, simply through ignorance.”
The episode first aired in the United Kingdom on Channel 5.

“Peppa Pig” is not the only children’s series to introduce LGBT characters.
Odd Squad, a children’s math show featured on PBS Kids, also included a lesbian couple on an episode this summer when the characters attended the women’s wedding, and even helped them with their dresses and their hair, according to Christian Headlines.
There was also an episode this year on Apple TV Plus featuring the characters from Peanuts discussing LGBT families.
In the episode titled Snoopy Presents: To Mom (And Dad), With Love, Marcy tells Peppermint Patty, “Some kids even have two moms,” according to Christian Headlines.
