NBA Star Steph Curry on Why He Reads Bible to His Kids: "That's How I Learned My Faith"
If you could have any superpower, what would it be?
Golden State Warriors point guard Steph Curry knows that his superpower is perseverance.
The two-time MVP and four-time NBA champion player is also a father to three, Riley (10), Ryan (7), and Canon (4). In an interview with Fatherly, Curry talks about his new children’s book, I Have a Superpower.
In the book, he drew from lessons about perseverance in his own life, hoping to illustrate for kids how hard work and positive attitudes can help anyone make it through difficult situations.
“Though not autobiographical, Superpower follows an 8-year-old named Hughes on a journey of self-discovery. Like Curry, Hughes loves playing basketball and has to keep his head up to achieve his goals.”
When asked if there were any books he enjoyed growing up that he makes a point of sharing with his kids, Curry opened up about his faith. “My parents read a lot of Bible stories with me. That’s how I learned my faith, so those are very meaningful to me to share with my kids.”
Curry discussed the challenge of being in a profession, like his father, that requires him to be on the road a lot. “We’re fortunate to have FaceTime when I’m on the road. My dad traveled a lot during his 16 years in the NBA, and I don’t know how my parents did it back in the day without technology.”
He makes a point when its off-season to show up at his kids’ practices and to optimize carpool time.
Christian Headlines reports that Curry’s “parents were integral to his faith journey and that he has made Scripture a central part of his home life with his wife and three children.”
Curry’s parents cultivated an environment where he learned at a young age how to respond to failure. He talks about vividly remembering his parents support after he missed two free-throws causing his team to lose a game when he played 10-and-under AAU basketball.
“Even now, the emotions I experience when I think of that time are very tangible. And the power of that experience has helped me learn not to be afraid of failure.” Curry now encourages his children to try things, even knowing they won’t all work out.
“My parents set that foundation for belief and confidence that can prepare you for any moment and not be afraid of what the consequences might be or what the outcomes are going to be.”
What a powerful example of faith and perseverance passing on from one generation to the next.
