We all need courage to advocate for the unborn, especially during the current heated debates happening in the media and over dinner tables across America. According to Detroit Catholic, Jim Harbaugh, American football coach and former quarterback, displayed that courage at a July 17th Right to Life dinner in Plymouth, Michigan.

Harbaugh is a Big-Ten Winning University of Michigan tough-as-nails coach and he demonstrated that in his address at the sold-out event.

In line with the evening’s theme, “We were Meant to Be Courageous”, he stated that “I believe in having the courage to let the unborn be born.”

Harbaugh credited his upbringing, faith and understanding of science as the drivers behind his beliefs about the “whole-life ethic” he shares with his wife, Sarah.

The Catholic pro-life coach quoted from Jeremiah 1:5, “‘Before I formed you in the womb, I knew you. Before you were born, I set you apart. I appointed you as a prophet to the nations.'” Among other comments he stated, “In God’s plan, each unborn human truly has a future filled with potential, talent, dreams and love.”

He added, “To me, the right choice is to have the courage to let the unborn be born.”

Harbaugh’s right-to-life views inform both his parenting and his coaching. The coach cited his family, his children and players he’s coached as evidence that “the unborn are amazing gifts from God to make this world a better place.”

Harbaugh acknowledged the political division in the country today but has faith that Americans can respect one another and work through these challenges to determine laws that respect people from the womb and throughout their entire lives.

Following the keynotes of both the coach and of Fr. John Riccardo of Acts XXIX, Sarah Harbaugh also shared her testimony before all three took questions.

While acknowledging we must speak respectfully with others, Coach Harbaugh stated it’s important to be clear about what we believe and know why we believe it.
