College Student Finds Baby Covered in Ants Abandoned in Trash

It’s hard to imagine a happy ending to a story that begins with a baby abandoned on a pile of trash but this story ends well.

Now four-year-old Emilio Angel Jeremiah was four-months old when he was discovered lying in that pile of trash in his homeland of Haiti. Twenty-seven-year-old Jimmy Amisial, home from Texas State University to celebrate the New Year described what he saw to KRIV-TV.

“You could see him crying, and he had no clothes on, he was naked and he had fire ants crawling all over him,” Amisial explained, and that “because of Haitian superstitions a group of people surrounding the baby were too afraid to rescue him.”

“No one wanted to touch the baby because they thought the baby was cursed, they were like it’s New Year’s Eve, the devil is trying to get us,” Amisial said.

The communications major had experience volunteering at orphanages in Haiti, so he didn’t hesitate to rescue Emilio and take him home.

Now, his story is going viral as he works to raise necessary funds to complete his adoption of the beautiful toddler.

Amisial said “the adoption process in his home country [is] expensive, but says he doesn’t regret the decision to become a single father. ‘Whenever he’s talking to me, he’s saying “Oh daddy I need this, I need that. I need a tablet, buy me a bike;” he has someone he can go to and ask for stuff, and I’m very proud of that.'”

Is a superstition a good reason to deny helping someone in need?

The fundraiser has garnered over $135,000 and is still climbing. The big-hearted single dad hopes to bring his son back to the United States to be with him as soon as possible. These funds will make that possible as well as help Amisial to finish college and support Emilio.

But, Amisial sees beyond this one child he’s rescued to the others who remain in orphanages in Haiti and hopes to also become a benefactor to those still awaiting adoption.

Whatever else the future holds for this beautiful family, they will always celebrate the power of redemption from a life that began without promise to one now that promises nothing but love.
