Pamela Breece, the Phoenix, Arizona illustrator who owns and loves Charlie considers herself a “grown-up Pippi Longstocking,” according to People Magazine.
“She calls Charlie her ‘house horse.’ He sleeps in his stall in the barn at night with Breece’s other horses, but during the day — as long as the back door is open — he roams inside Breece’s home, turning down her bedcovers, poking his head into her office, and wandering into the kitchen for a snack.”
“‘He’s really into watermelon right now,’ says Breece, owner of the equestrian brand Pony Macaroni. ‘I love all my horses, but he is definitely very, very, very special.'”
All Breece’s other horses remain outdoors but Charlie is welcome to come in, even if it is a tight squeeze. The bright horse has learned to navigate well and in six years, he’s had only two accidents.
Breece rehomed Charlie six years ago from a Navajo reservation. Not long after, one day after riding him, she got an alert from her doorbell camera.
“I was waiting for a UPS package for work,” Breece said. “I had taken his saddle and his bridle off, and I just turned around and ran to go into my yard, into my house, to go to get the door. After I took a few steps, I realized he was running behind me! So that’s how he came in the very first time.
“I was running, and he just followed me. He came in the back door, came all the way up to the front door with me.”
The New York Post reports that all the animals on Breece’s four-acre ranch are welcome inside her elegant home. That includes “four 1,000-pound horses, two mini horses, two dogs, 25 chickens and two piglets.”
Breece says her beloved equine makes her smile every day and what’s not to love about that?
“The coolest part is that he’s making so many people smile … He’s brought a lot of smiles to people all over the world.”
On Charlie’s Facebook page, Breece said she’s glad Charlie doesn’t understand how much of a sensation he’s become!
“Thank goodness our sweet, crazy Charlie has no idea about any of this or he might become even more demanding (if that’s even possible).”
