One of the Most Common Needs of Every Human Heart

A World Full of Prophets

One of the common needs of every human heart is the need to hear from the voice of a prophet, to hear from someone who has something to say. And our culture is full of so-called prophets and wise men.

Some call them talk show hosts or political commentators, maybe news analysts or viral influencers on social media. All of us want to hear what they have to say.

We were made to know and hear from God ever since the beginning of Genesis.

The Lord God was and is the first Prophet who delivered words from God with authority, power, and truth, filled with promises and warnings in Genesis 2:16-17.

He promised life and death, spoke truth and power to man.

The first false prophet to enter into the world was the Serpent in Genesis 3. He was a false prophet because his words are contrary to God’s word in Genesis 2.

Every whisper of Satan is but an empty echo of God’s Word.

The Frailty of Every Man’s Word

Isaiah 40 brings us to this reality: “A voice says, ‘Cry!’ And I said, ‘What shall I cry?’ All flesh is grass, and all its beauty like the flower of the field” (Isaiah 40:6, ESV).

What should Isaiah tell the people? God commands Isaiah to tell the people of their frailty. Every man is dying, and all their pomp and beauty is passing away.

The Christian worldview must see the brevity of man and every sinner’s need to hear from the Eternal God. The world is passing away along with its desires (1 John 2:15-17).

There is no word from the president, no word from Fox News, and no word from our own traditions and imaginations that can solve man’s greatest problem.

We need an unchanging word that speaks life, promises life, and gives life because the world is full of false prophets making false promises in the news and in the media.

The Word of our God

The good news is that God has given us a Word! God has spoken to us, He has given us words of life, promise, and authority in a world full of false prophets. The world needs to hear the truth of the Scriptures.

Every word of God proves true (Proverbs 30:5). The world is craving truth, to be told of great things. By our nature we suppress the truth of God and exchange it for a lie (Romans 1:18-23).

But as Christians, we must recognize our roles are prophets in the world to speak the living words of God to a dying world.

Isaiah 40:8, ESV, says, “The grass withers, the flower fades, but the word of our God will stand forever.” The world needs to hear the life-promising and life-giving words of God.

And according to the Apostle Peter, that is the gospel of the Lord Jesus Christ (1 Peter 1:24-25).

Where else would we go? Christ has “the words of eternal life” (John 6:68, ESV).

May we give the world real life from He who is eternal life, and speak truth to them in a dying world full of lies.
