Video: Age 10 Boy Saves Mom's Life After She Has Seizure in Pool
When a child is in harm’s way, parents react immediately, shielding them from any danger present. Sometimes, it’s the child that protects their parents when danger is present.
This was the case involving 10 year-old Gavin Keeney. The Oklahoma boy has been praised as a hero for coming to the rescue of his mother, Lori, who is epileptic and known to have seizures.
“I heard what was a lot of splashing and moving around,” said Gavin according to KTEN. “I heard kind of yelling, but also drowning… so then I looked and saw her seizing and so I went and jumped in and got her back to the ladder.”
Lori recalled the horrifying moment with Good Morning America.
“[Gavin] had just gotten out of the pool and I just went into a seizure,” she said. “It scared me more than I’ve ever been scared.”
The amazing rescue was caught on the family’s surveillance camera and shared on ABC News’ Facebook account. The footage shows the fifth grader without hesitating, diving into the pool and carrying his mom to the ladder, all while keeping her head above water.
Gavin was able to hold onto her long enough for his grandfather to jump in and help.
After watching the footage, Keeney reflected on watching her son’s heroic actions.
“Truly amazing thing to see, and I don’t normally get to see him in action and what he gets to do after I’m having a seizure,” she said. “This is the first time I actually got to see it just because of security cameras … so much pride in him… at the same time, it was heartbreaking to watch.”
For his heroism, Gavin was rewarded his second Saving a Life plaque from the Kingston police department. The first plaque was awarded after Gavin saved his mother’s life after she started choking and called 911 after the Heimlich maneuver didn’t work.
“Just see really great things for him in this field of helping others, in whatever capacity,” said Keeney. “He has such great compassion for humankind and his friends and family, and I really hope that maybe this is a future for him.”
“He’s definitely my hero,” the mother said. “But I really do feel like he’s my guardian angel, as well.”
Truly Gavin was sent to be his mom’s guardian angel.
