US Army Green Beret Answers Call To Spread Hope and Strength Through Jesus to Ukrainian Soldiers

When Sergeant First Class Christian Hickey went on to join the Army as an elite Special Forces Green Beret after leaving the Marines, he had no idea that he would be called on for a different mission. When war broke out in the Ukraine, Hickey decided to take action.

“I wasn’t called here to shed any blood,” Hickey told CBN News. “I was just called here to tell people about the blood that was shed for them a long time ago.”

Hickey’s superiors were concerned over the idea of a US National Guardsman working in Ukraine.

“I am not here representing the United States Military,” he said. “I’m not here representing my command I’m not here representing the National Guard. I’m here as an ambassador of Jesus Christ, and that’s exactly what I’m doing here. As a missionary in Ukraine.”

Hickey told CBN that once he arrived in the Ukraine, he could see that the troops were in need of medics. It did not take long for Hickey to step in and help with one of his specialties being in Tactical Combat Casualty Care.

“It’s the scariest thing I’ve ever dealt with on the front line,” he said. “When you cannot see in front of you, and then you have a Russian drone above you who just has freedom of movement to direct their fires right on top of you.”

Hickey and his team also brought a convoy to Kherson after its fall, assisting its residents who were running low on food and water.

“We are switching gears a little bit. This winter is going to be absolutely tough for the Ukrainian people,” said Hickey. “There are going to be elderly folks, who I love and I respect, who are going to die because they froze to death inside their homes. And you know what, we’re going to be here to deliver them food, deliver them firewood. We are going to be here throughout the winter.”

“We want to basically be the hands and feet of Jesus,” he continued. “These very strong powerful NGOs bought all this food, and they don’t have the action arm to actually deliver it. We’ll take the food and we’ll make sure it gets to the right people at the right place at the right time.”

The area around the city of Kherson is dangerous due to the presence of Russian minefields. Hickey and his team have no problems taking the risks, which makes the people even more grateful.

“Since I’ve been here I’ve done more along the lines of Green Beret stuff than I’ve ever done in my military career. I’m out here working with the populace, working alongside them, providing them the skills they need, providing them food, providing them water, and help build them up.”

We pray that God continues to bless all of those in the Ukraine and are thankful for men like Hickey who continue to do God’s work.
