A McGregor, Minnesota woman and her two young children are alive thanks to a selfless young man who was in the right place at the right time. Trent Lachance, a 21 year-old Coon Rapids native, happened to be traveling from Grand Rapids on Monday when he noticed a pick-up truck underwater.

According to KMSP, the Minnesota State Patrol reported that the GMC Sierra was heading westbound on Highway 210 near 230th Avenue in McGregor pulling a bobcat when the driver lost control and flipped upside down into a ditch.

Other drivers stopped to help the distressed motorist. At that moment, Lachance knew what he had to do.

“I pulled over and got out and jumped down there and did everything I possibly could,” Lachance said. “They were trying to break into the window, and they couldn’t get into it. And I could hear the mom screaming, so that just kind of like boosted adrenaline into me.”

Lachance told KMSP that he broke a window open to pull the mother out, when she told him that her two young children were still inside. After rescuing the infant, one of the drivers was a nurse and started performing CPR on the girl.

In the backseat, Lachance spotted the 3 year-old. With most of the truck being under water, he proceeded to cut the seat belt, but still could not get the toddler out. Another driver was able to  flip the truck over using a chain to rescue the boy.

“Honestly, just I want to get this family out. I wasn’t like freaked out or nothing. I just wanted to make sure that they didn’t have to like go through that anymore. I wanted to do everything I possibly could. I didn’t want that thought like, ‘What if I did something more?'”

Worried about the mother and two children, Lachance told KMSP that he stayed on-site.

“I waited there,” Lachance said. “I wouldn’t want to leave not knowing if they were OK or not. I waited to see if the infant and that 3-year-old were still living.”

The mother and her young children were airlifted to the hospital, where the toddler was in critical condition and mother and baby have non-life threatening injuries.

What’s more astonishing is that Lachance, who is now a Texas resident, was in town that day for a wedding, which proves that God’s timing is always perfect.
