Your Prayers Are More Than Just Wishes

Seated to Reign

The Lord is seated upon the throne of heaven, all of our life is under His rule. All that lies beneath the throne of God is under the sovereignty of God (Revelation 5:1-2).

Psalm 103:19, ESV, says, “The Lord has established his throne in the heavens, and his kingdom rules over all.” God’s hand extends to all that He has made. And as a Christian, you can walk with confidence in the world — why? Because this sovereign Lord is your Father. Your Father rules the galaxy for His glory and your good.

Living Under His Reign

The fight of faith is to see God in relation to all things. To look at creation as subservient to God. All things are His servants. Thus, this should excite our dull prayer lives.

We pray because God is able to do anything. As Jeremiah said, there is nothing too hard for the Lord.

Writer Jerry Bridges once said, “If God is not sovereign, we have no assurance that He is able to answer our prayers. Our prayers would become nothing more than wishes.”

Do you interact with your supreme Father? No angel can tread as close to the throne as you do. Because of the work of Christ, God’s children come to the throne of grace.

Your Father’s World

I heard Pastor Joel Beeke tell the the story of the great 19th Century Princeton Seminary theologian Charles Hodge. He was welcomed to Princeton by their faculty and they had an entire house ready for him.

He was shown the whole thing, and they told him afterward, “We’ll change anything in the house, just let us know.”

Charles Hodge replied, “I only want one thing changed. I noticed the doorknob of the study is too high for my youngest child to reach it. Could you put the doorknob lower, because I have promised that all my children could have access to me at any time?”

Your Father in heaven will never turn a deaf ear to your prayers.

Your Father rules all things, yet bends to hear His children. Would you live this life far from your sovereign Father?
