Couple on Honeymoon Help Rescue Over One Dozen Babies from Burning Building

While Rhode Island newlyweds David Squillante and Doran Smith went on their honeymoon in Spain, they knew that it would be a trip to remember, just not for the reason they anticipated.

The Bristol couple were only a few days into their honeymoon in Barcelona and on their way to a guided tour at a park, according to the Boston Globe, when they heard women screaming. It was then they noticed the flames coming from an entryway of a building.

“I saw a flame coming out of the doorway, next to the door that these women had come out of,” Smith told WJAR. “So, I said ‘Oh my God there’s a fire.”

It was then that Squillante leaped into action and ran into the building. He was unaware that the building was a nursery.

“Instinct took over,” Squillante told WJAR. “I found myself looking at 15, 20 babies sleeping, and immediately just kind of lined everyone up and we started grabbing them, putting them into the crib.”

According to the Boston Globe, the room containing the babies had not caught on fire yet. The couple was able to roll each baby into a crib and remove them from the building safely. It did not take long for others to join in.

“We couldn’t speak the language, but there was a universal language — we were all just trying to help,” Smith told WJAR.

The incident lasted for a few minutes and after they made sure everyone was safe and things were under control, they went on the park tour that they were on their way to.

“We looked at each other and said, remember that time we saved a bunch of babies?” Smith said.

“It felt like we watched it in a movie,” Squillante said. “It just didn’t feel real.”

While the couple was married on Oct. 10, 2020, their honeymoon was delayed by two years due to Covid-19. Had the couple not been honeymooning at this time, they might not have been present to help save all of those babies.

From a religious perspective, the couple was clearly used by God to be in the right place at the right time.

After this ordeal, Squillante has decided to become a volunteer Bristol firefighter, just like his father and grandfather, according to the Boston Globe. It appears that this incident led Squillante to his true calling, helping others.
