Christian Life 101: Meditation

The Blessed Man

The blessed life according to God is saturated in the Word of God. God measures blessing by what endures throughout eternity. Thus, according to Psalm 1:1-2, ESV, “Blessed is the man…[who] delight[s] in the law of the Lord, and on his law he meditates day and night.”

In a 150 character Tweet world, we scroll through Scriptures like news feed. May God uproot our skimming of the Bible and plunge our minds to think deeply about Him whom angels fear to gaze upon.

The Necessity of Meditating

In John 17, our Lord’s prayer for His elect was that we would be sanctified, grow in holiness (John 17:17). If Jesus prayed for your holiness, then He desires your holiness more than you do. And what is the means by which the Son of God Himself gives us? In the very same breath “your word is truth,” (John 17:17, ESV).

Thomas Watson said it this way, “If when a man is cold, you ask how long he should stand by the fire? Sure, till he be thoroughly warm, and made fit for his work. So, Christian, thy heart is cold; now stand at the fire of meditation till thou findest thy affections warmed, and thou art made fit for spiritual service.”

How long do we spend meditating upon vacation plans, and not upon the vacation our souls need found in the living giving words of Christ? May we be bound to this Book!

Chewing and Memorizing

To memorize and meditate upon Scripture is essential for implanting the truths of the Word into our hearts. It is not enough to merely throw seed upon soil and expect it to grow; instead, it must be sown and settled into the soil.

So it is with the Word of Christ. To read without meditating, it has been said, is like eating without chewing. If we are to be doers of the Word, we must be chewers of the Word.

Stick notecards in your car, on the fridge; write them in markers on bathroom mirrors, mediate while standing in line or in the waiting room! In meditation, the warmth of the Word will not only melt away our spiritual coldness, but it will ensure warm affections and increase our conformity to the Lord Jesus Christ, the Holy Son of God.

When one has found great treasure, he cannot help but delight and treasure it. The words of Christ are life (John 6:68), worth more than gold even much fine gold (Psalm 19:10). Don’t just read the Word, feed on the Word.
