A Washington woman’s quick thinking led to her escaping a horrific demise. The incident occurred on Oct. 16, when Young An, 42, was allegedly attacked in her home by her husband, Chae Kyong An, 53, after a discussion about divorce and finances.

According to Young, Chae punched her multiple times before binding her eyes, hands and body with duct tape. Before Chae drove her into the woods near Lacey to be buried, Young managed to contact 911 and send a notification to her emergency contacts using her Apple Watch.

In the chilling 911 call, which lasted 7 minutes, Young can be heard sobbing and attempting to speak to the dispatcher, who found it difficult to understand her, according to the New York Post,

“Can you hear me?” the dispatcher asks.

Young appeared to yell, “Yes! Yes!”

According to Yahoo News, the dispatcher reassured Young to stay on the line, but Chae had already broken Young’s watch with a hammer before dragging her into the garage, putting her into a van and driving into the woods to bury her. By the grace of God, a police officer had already been sent to the home.

Young told police that Chae stabbed her in the chest and placed her in a shallow grave and that she managed to keep dirt off her face by wiggling around as she laid in the grave for hours. After tearing off the duct tape, Young allegedly ran for about 30 minutes until she found a house to plead for help.

She reportedly shouted “My husband is trying to kill me! Help me!” after a sheriff’s deputy arrived on scene.

“She had duct tape still wrapped around her neck, lower face and ankles,” according to a declaration of probable cause cited by ABC News. “There was extensive bruising to her legs, arms and head and her clothing and hair were covered in dirt.”

Young, who had a domestic violence protection order against her estranged husband, told investigators that she heard him digging in the dirt before he stabbed her in her chest, according to the New York Post.

“She was drug and put into the ground. … A heavy tree was put on top of her. After being put into the ground she could hear her husband walking around the hole and dirt being put on top of her,” the court document cited by NBC News reported.

Chae pleaded not guilty to charges of first-degree attempted murder, first-degree kidnapping and first-degree domestic violence assault on Nov 1. He was booked into Thurston County Jail and is currently being held without bail. He is scheduled back in court on Nov. 16.
