96-Pound Beagle Starts Incredible Weight Loss Journey Thanks to Shelter
Dogs have been known as man’s best friend due to their close relationship with humans.
Last month, Pound Buddies Animal Shelter of Muskegon, Michigan took in a Beagle that can be considered larger than life, in more ways than one. Rolo was sent to the shelter when his owner had a medical emergency. Little did anyone know that Rolo was also in need as well.
“He had been left out on a porch, there was feces just all over, [and] food and kind of garbage,” Director Lana Carson said according to WZZM. “It kind of looked like a neglected situation for quite a while.”
At 96.3 pounds, Rolo is one of the heaviest animals on site. The average adult beagle is around 30 pounds, making Rolo massively obese by over 60 pounds.
“He actually weighs more than a mastiff that we have in here right now,” says Carson.
While Rolo’s weight is concerning, the vet gave him a clean bill of health and believes that the pup is seven or eight years old. He is currently on a prescription diet dog food to get his weight in check. Given the circumstances, Rolo is a happy dog.
“He is the happiest little guy,” says Carson. “He loves to see people. As soon as you walk in the room, he just musters up as much energy as he can, and he gets up and he waddles over. He’s very affectionate.”
Rolo has an open-crate policy, allowing him to get as much exercise as possible. The shelter is looking to place Rolo into an experienced foster family for the time being to give him the extra love, care and support he needs on his journey.
“It’s gonna be exciting to watch his progress,” said Carson. “I think he wants it, though. So, I think it’s gonna be good.”
Thanks to Carson and the other staff at Pound Buddies Animal Shelter, it looks like Rolo will have a new leash on life to follow.
