Twenty-four-year-old Yasmin Jackson sent her daughter to day care. The girl greeted her by begging to eat when she picked her up later that day.
Jackson had sent her 5-year-old, Amari, to Kingswood Day Care Nursery with a pre-packed lunch. However, the staff at the nursery did not allow the child to eat, due to an unspoken religious rule.
Heading into her first day at the day care, Amari’s lunch consisted of a chicken salad sandwich, bread sticks, humus, chocolate, and fruit. When Yasmin came to get her daughter at the end of the day, the lunch had not been touched. “When I picked her up at the end of the day the first thing she said to me was, ‘Mummy I’m really hungry, can I have my lunch now?’” she recalled.

When Yasmin spoke with the manager of the day care, she claims that they would not allow the little girl to eat her lunch because the staff was unsure if it was halal. Yasmin explained that they were a Christian family and did not observe those practices, but the manager stated that they do not allow any non-halal meats into the nursery.
According to The Standard, the day care attempted to give Amari an alternative meal which she refused to eat. However, this incident was still posted to Yasmin’s Facebook page and has gained tremendous media attention. The day care has since fallen victim to slander and threats online.
Kingswood continues to deny any allegations of starving Amari, but the investigation remains ongoing and the nursery will still not address their packed lunch policy to the public. Jackson said, “This is not about being anti-Muslim. It’s anti-starving my child, and anti-stupidness.”
