How Life Can Change When God Is Your Portion

I stood on the beach today watching my kids and husband play in the Pacific. I felt the warm sun on my shoulders, and inhaled the magical, healing salt air. As I dug my toes into the sand, a peace and calm filled my heart as my eyes filled with tears of gratitude.

“Thank you,” I whispered. The presence of God felt so alive in my heart.

“‘The LORD is my portion,’ says my soul, ‘therefore I will hope in him.'” (Lamentations 3:24, ESV)

I’ve been learning what it means to have God as my portion. When I think of the word “portion” I think of a meal. This is fitting because Jesus is our bread, our nourishment. When we are living on Him, we will always have enough.

The word “portion” actually means “share” as in our share of the inheritance! This is amazing because we share in everything Jesus Christ has.

There are so many worries in this world. So many troubles. It is tempting to put your hope in your home, your family, your secure paycheck. But all those things can disappoint, change, even disappear at a moment’s notice. People and things will always fail you. Jesus is the only thing that will never let you down.

All these attributes are things the world so desperately needs. When God is your portion, you can’t help but see others’ needs and do your best to meet them.

When God is your portion, the whole world looks brighter. Even in the worst darkness you can’t help but see the light, because it is burning so brightly inside you. And everyone around it will see it too, and flock to you, desperate for some color and hope.

So make the Lord your portion today. Cry out to Jesus and allow Him to be your everything. He is so worthy.
